Vaginal Microbiome testing

What is Vaginal Microbiome testing?

Vaginal microbiome testing is an advanced diagnostic tool that provides detailed insight into the balance of bacteria and microorganisms within the vaginal environment.

Rather than focusing only on identifying infections, this testing helps assess the underlying microbial ecosystem, which plays a key role in vaginal health, symptom recurrence, and treatment response.

Why this matters

Many women experience ongoing or recurrent symptoms such as: Thrush, Bacterial vaginosis (BV), Vaginal discharge or irritation, Recurrent urinary tract infections.

Often, standard testing identifies a single infection — but does not fully explain why symptoms keep returning.

Vaginal microbiome testing helps uncover these deeper drivers.

What the test assesses

This advanced test provides detailed information on: Vaginal pH and overall environment, Beneficial bacteria (including Lactobacillus species), Opportunistic and pathogenic bacteria, Candida (yeast) species and levels, Markers associated with bacterial vaginosis, Detection of certain sexually transmitted infections (STIs), Overall microbial balance (dysbiosis).

This allows for a more complete understanding of what may be contributing to symptoms.

Examples of what we might see

Testing may identify patterns such as: Reduced protective Lactobacillus bacteria, Overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria associated with BV, Presence of Candida species (including non-albicans strains), Mixed infections or biofilm-associated organisms, Changes linked to hormonal factors or menopause

These patterns help explain why symptoms may persist or recur despite treatment.

Laboratory Quality & Cost

Testing is performed through NutriPATH, an Australian NATA-accredited laboratory, ensuring high standards of quality, accuracy, and clinical reliability.

This test is not covered by Medicare and involves an out-of-pocket cost. You will be advised of the current cost prior to proceeding.

Kylie Sayce NP does not receive any financial benefit from this test.

It is offered in the same way as a referral to any external pathology provider — based purely on clinical relevance.

When Testing May Be Recommended - Vaginal microbiome testing may be considered if you experience: Recurrent or persistent vaginal symptoms, Symptoms that return after treatment, Unclear or mixed clinical presentations, Repeated infections (thrush, BV, UTIs), Suspected microbiome imbalance, Symptoms related to hormonal changes or menopause

Important to Know - Vaginal microbiome testing is not always required for every patient.

It is recommended selectively, where it is likely to provide meaningful clinical insight and guide more effective care.

Standard Pathology Testing

Where appropriate, we also refer to standard pathology laboratories for testing.

Some of these tests may be bulk billed, depending on the pathology provider and eligibility criteria.

Integrating Results into Care

Results are always interpreted in the context of your: Symptoms, Medical history, Hormonal stage & Previous treatments.

From here, a personalised plan is developed, which may include: Conventional treatment where appropriate, Microbiome restoration strategies, Lifestyle and contributing factor assessment, Ongoing support to reduce recurrence.
